Mission Statement

Founded in 2003, the Latin Music Studies (LMS) area at Texas State University upholds the mission of the School of Music through its commitment to excellence in music teaching and research for all students at the university.  As part of this mission, LMS fosters the performance and study of Latin Music genres—primarily but not exclusively Mariachi and Salsa—according to the highest professional and academic standards.  LMS also seeks to educate all music majors, Texas State students in general, and the surrounding communities, about the rich world of Latin American Music.  More specifically, LMS:

  • offers programs at the master’s level for students seeking to specialize in Latin Music performance.
  • offers performing opportunities for all Texas State students through its mariachi and salsa ensembles.
  • offers courses in Latin Music History for all graduate students at Texas State.
  • educates the community about Latin Music through its public performances.
